Boozy-Appetizer

Metaxa-Meatballs-1For a few weeks I’ve been experimenting with some appetizer favorites. Today I’m adding a popular Greek brandy-like spirit called Metaxa to create these boozy-meatballs, adding a warm kick. They’re tangy and tasty and perfect for a Holiday cocktail party.

9 Ingredients That Will Instantly Make Feta Feel Special

feta-3---Pinterest

Sometimes even Feta needs to feel special. Sitting still and alone in that murky brine inside the refrigerator might become boring. Maybe she wants to do more than get crumbled onto a salad. Maybe she’s grown tired of being an accessory on the table next to the olives and bread. Maybe she sometimes feels like she’s more than just AN ingredient, but rather, she’s THE ingredient. Today, with this simple technique, she’s all dressed-up and ready to dance ζεϊμπέκικο (Zeibekiko) with your taste buds.

A Simple Farewell to the Last of Summer’s Flavors

HeirloomHummus-10
Summer is officially over. I know, I’m not providing “Breaking News” here. You may have noticed, however, that there are still a few summer flavors lingering about in the grocery store and farmer’s market. I’m mainly referring to Zucchini and Tomatoes. They are naturally delicious when consumed fresh straight from the garden to the table, not requiring a lot of seasonings and fuss.

How I Roll

Dolmathes-13

I happen have plenty of experience with rolling dolmathes. As a child, I would take leaves from my father’s fig tree, make a simple mud-mixture of dirt and water and roll dolmathes in my back yard play kitchen. This grown-up version of dolmathes tastes much better than my mud dolmathes… trust me. :)

Figs! Glorious Figs!

Grilled-Figs-7My parents used to have a hugely overgrown Black Mission Fig tree on their property. I was young and sometimes our young minds create big pictures in our little heads, but I felt as if the tree produced fruit all year long. I do know for a fact that it was taking over an entire portion of their yard – that images is a real-life-adult memory. During a yard re-model they decided to remove the tree. I was devastated.

I’ll just have a salad… bite.

Salad-Bites-3About 200 years ago Greece was introduced to the tomato. No, I didn’t forget a zero in that number. You read that right. Two hundred. 1815 to be exact, was when the tomato plant was introduced to mainland Greece. Kind of hard to believe, right?

Happy Fava’s Day

Fava-7

Recently, I asked for my husband’s input regarding a “Greek-ified” Father’s Day recipe to write about. Father’s Day seems to be about BBQ and all the fixings. I knew I didn’t want to tamper with the BBQ tradition (mainly because backyard BBQ isn’t an option right now under my current living conditions!) but I was stumped as to what recipe I could contribute to the occasion.

Greek Pizza

Pizza-4

According to Pizza.com 94% of Americans eat pizza regularly. Define “regularly”… because I’m pretty sure the residents in my household eat pizza for dinner at least once a week, if not twice, and some of us… no names mentioned…  have been known to indulge in a slice twice in one day. :)  I knew I had a problem when a pizzeria owner said to me “hey… weren’t you in here earlier?”

Savory Pastitsio Cups

Pastichio-Cups-20Pastitsio (pahs-TEET-see-o) is a well-known Greek meal. Some refer to it as “the Greek lasagna” and just like lasagna, a large pan of this delicious pasta based favorite goes a long way. But this dish can be tricky; creating a nice thick layer of béchamel sauce on the top of layers of noodles and spiced seasoned meat is an art and when it doesn’t go your way, it can be a disappointing disaster. Trust me, I’ve prepared many of them (disappointing disasters, that is.).  Sometimes I feel like I am praying and wishing for the béchamel to levitate atop the layers… but that never seems to work for me.

Lamb and Pork Souvlakia

Souvlaki-5
Living in a New York City apartment without a back yard or balcony to house a grill can be a challenge for a west coast transplant. Desperately wanting to welcome our long-awaited spring while celebrating Easter this past weekend I needed to be creative. As always, I like to keep things simple. Luckily I believe I’ve stumbled upon a basic Greek marinade that is ridiculously simple to prepare. Turns out it’s pretty delicious too. In addition, the awesome Cuisinart Griddler makes NYC apartment grilling achievable. {Yay!}
