Metaxa BBQ Meatballs

Metaxa-Meatballs-6Nothing says the Holidays like a cocktail party filled with delicious and scrumptious appetizers! Noshing on small bites of various different tastes some skewered with fancy toothpicks screams festive and fun in my book.

For a few weeks I’ve been experimenting with some appetizer favorites. Today I’m adding a popular Greek brandy-like spirit called Metaxa to create these boozy-meatballs, adding a warm kick. They’re tangy and tasty and perfect for a Holiday cocktail party.

A little about Metaxa:  The House of Metaxa was founded by a Greek entrepreneur named Spyros Metaxas in 1888.

Metaxa-Meatballs-12Metaxa is a blend of wine distillates, Muscat wines and Mediterranean herb and floral extracts. While Metaxas is a family name, Metaxi (μετάξι) in Greek means “silk”. Coincidence? Take a small sip of Metaxa and you tell me. :)

For the Meatballs:

1 pound ground pork

1 pound ground beef

2 cloves of garlic, finely minced

¾ of a cup seasoned Panko breadcrumbs

2 eggs, lightly beaten

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon chili powder

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon salt and pepper each

For the Metaxa BBQ Sauce:

1 cup ketchup

½ cup Metaxa ( 5 or 7 star)

3 tablespoons dark brown sugar

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard

2 tablespoons honey

½ teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon salt

Preheat the oven to 350° F. In a large bowl, combine all of the meatball ingredients using your hands to mix everything together. With a small ice-cream scoop, create your meatballs. They should be about 1-inch in size. I like to quickly use the scooper to create the meatballs dropping them onto the pan, then I go back and roll each one perfectly with my hands.

Bake for 15-20 minutes.

Prepare the Metaxa BBQ Sauce by combining all the ingredients in a large covered pot over medium heat. Whisk to combine. Simmer for 15-20 minutes while the meatballs cook.

Once the meatballs are cooked through, remove them from the oven and gently add the meatballs into the pot with the Metaxa BBQ Sauce. Gently toss to coat. Cover and allow to simmer for 5-10 minutes until ready to serve.
