A Simple Farewell to the Last of Summer’s Flavors

HeirloomHummus-10
Summer is officially over. I know, I’m not providing “Breaking News” here. You may have noticed, however, that there are still a few summer flavors lingering about in the grocery store and farmer’s market. I’m mainly referring to Zucchini and Tomatoes. They are naturally delicious when consumed fresh straight from the garden to the table, not requiring a lot of seasonings and fuss.

I’ll just have a salad… bite.

Salad-Bites-3About 200 years ago Greece was introduced to the tomato. No, I didn’t forget a zero in that number. You read that right. Two hundred. 1815 to be exact, was when the tomato plant was introduced to mainland Greece. Kind of hard to believe, right?

In addition, the awesome Cuisinart Griddler makes NYC apartment grilling achievable. {Yay!}

Fully Loaded Spiced Greek Fries

Fries-7

Introduce me to a Greek who doesn’t like potatoes, and I will call that person a liar! Greeks love to enjoy potatoes with practically every dish. A typical Greek potato is peeled, cut, slowly baked and dressed in oregano, olive oil and lemon juice. They are in a word, delicious. Today, I did not make a typical Greek potato- but a spiced-up, tasty and flavorful version of an oven-baked French fry.

Slow-roasted Tomatoes with Basil Oregano and Garlic

Tomatoes-4Slow-roasted Tomatoes with Basil Oregano and Garlic is more of a method than a recipe. There’s not much to them and your oven does all the work. This is a great recipe to try on the weekend when you have cleaning or yard work to do around the house. Prepare the tomatoes in the morning, pop them in the oven and forget about them for 2 hours while you scrub the bathroom floors or pull weeds in the back yard!

Greek-Shepherds-Pie-1

With St. Patrick’s Day around the corner I thought what better way to celebrate than to “Greek-ify” an Irish staple: Shepherd’s Pie.
