Fig and Walnut Oatmeal Squares

Here’s to Healthy Snacking!Fig and Walnut Oatmeal Squares | figsandfeta.comClearly, I have a sweet tooth. And I love blondies, bars, or anything with a butter-brown sugar-oatmeal base. I really love it when I can create healthier versions of my favorite sweets. These Fig and Walnut Oatmeal Squares are made with whole wheat flour, sweetened with brown sugar and dried figs and spiced with cinnamon and cloves. Adding walnuts to this bar adds fiber, protein and heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. I think you’ll find they are a tasty and satisfying healthy snack!

Quick {Sweet} Bread

FIG-BREAD-3My name is Alexandra, and I am a carb-oholic. I love and crave to eat anything in the carb family; pasta, bread, potatoes, bread, rice, bread… you get the picture.

A Simple Farewell to the Last of Summer’s Flavors

HeirloomHummus-10
Summer is officially over. I know, I’m not providing “Breaking News” here. You may have noticed, however, that there are still a few summer flavors lingering about in the grocery store and farmer’s market. I’m mainly referring to Zucchini and Tomatoes. They are naturally delicious when consumed fresh straight from the garden to the table, not requiring a lot of seasonings and fuss.

More Szauce Please…

Fudge-Pops-10I’ve been having so much fun recipe testing with Old School Favorites rich and delicious Chocolate Szauce and my children have been having a blast scraping the little glass jars clean. This szauce can go way beyond a delicious topping on an ice cream sundae.

Greek Chocolate Cookie Perfection

Cookies-3There are two things I have a hard time shaking: Cookies and Cake (Ok, three things: Ice Cream, too). If you were to mention the word ‘cake’ in a sentence I would obsess about it until I ate a piece.  For example: years ago my son and I needed to leave a kid’s birthday party early. Unfortunately, we left before cake was served. That night, after putting my then 2 year-old son to bed, I made a cake in order to scratch the itch. I then proceeded to eat two (large) pieces. The same is true with cookies. Talk of cookies  =  me making a batch of my favorite Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies with Greek Chocolate without hesitation.

Figs! Glorious Figs!

Grilled-Figs-7My parents used to have a hugely overgrown Black Mission Fig tree on their property. I was young and sometimes our young minds create big pictures in our little heads, but I felt as if the tree produced fruit all year long. I do know for a fact that it was taking over an entire portion of their yard – that images is a real-life-adult memory. During a yard re-model they decided to remove the tree. I was devastated.

I’ll just have a salad… bite.

Salad-Bites-3About 200 years ago Greece was introduced to the tomato. No, I didn’t forget a zero in that number. You read that right. Two hundred. 1815 to be exact, was when the tomato plant was introduced to mainland Greece. Kind of hard to believe, right?

Time to Chill

Pops-3Ahhh… summer. In my household during the summer, we go through ice cream and popsicles like water.  A few weeks ago I set out to create homemade popsicles and according to the household census: I’ve succeeded.

World Cup Fever

Flag-2

So, the Greek soccer team is still alive at the World Cup tournament. I’m not sure how it all works, how some teams stay alive even though they lose a match. We’re a baseball and basketball home, not really a soccer home.
